Have you prayed for Britney lately?

Church organizes support for Britney

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The congregation of Southland Christian Church is being asked to send letters of love and support to troubled pop star Britney Spears, described by the pastor as having made "devastating life choices."

"Take a few minutes and write a note to Britney Spears," pastor John Weece said in a sermon and in a blog on the church Web site. "No preaching. No criticizing. Just love. As a church, let's love Britney the way Jesus loves her."

Weece said the idea came as he watched repeated reports of Spears' reported problems with drugs and alcohol and the loss of custody of her children.

"If she were your next-door neighbor in the same situation without the money and success, wouldn't you care about her problems? Wouldn't you pray for her and offer her support and encouragement?" he asked members of the church.

Isn't that true? I'm guilty of occasionally using Britney as a punchline. Not too often, since I do find her situation more sad and perplexing than humorous or even scandalous. But enough to feel wrong about it.

When Britney burst on the international scene as a 16-year-old nine years ago (yes, you've known who she is THAT long) she professed faith in Christ. If so, she may be a child of God who went completely off the rails before she was even eligible to rent a car. Her two babies are also involved in this mess. And every waking moment of her life is documented by dozens of photographers who are wishing she'll do something - anything - wrong. That's cause for prayer if I've ever heard it.

Remember this troubled young girl from Louisiana sometime today.

If there ever was a more practical, "WWJD" sermon (and blog entry), I haven't heard of it in a very long time. Kudos...

Speaking of celebrity prayer needs: Jane Seymour ("Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman", "Live and Let Die") has had a rough time recently. Her mom passed away a few weeks ago, her house is in the path of the California wildfires, and she has food poisoning.

Yes, ZRick and Bubba mentioned that because she was previously scheduled to be on their program.

Good point. It's so easy to be critical of celebrities instead of pray for them.
